The San Francisco Bay is well known among sailors throughout the USA and around the world as a first class sailing destination. The winds usually pick up around noon and grow stronger during the afternoon until the lighten again during the evening hours.

 

Central Bay

The central bay covers roughly the area between the Golden Gate Bridge in the west, the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge in the south-east, and the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge in the north. The Bay Sailing Guide from Latitude 38 describes sailing in this area in detail. The San Francisco City front, Sausalito, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Berkeley, and Treasure Island are great attractions in this area.

 

 

 

 

South Bay

The south bay covers roughly the area south of the San Franciso - Oakland Bay Bridge and all the way to Alviso in the south. Actractions in this area of the Bay are the Oakland/Alameda Estuary with the Jack London Square, Ballena Bay, Redwood City with its marsh lands and wild life viewing, Coyote Point with its Coyote Point County Recration Area and Museum for Environmental Education, and Brisbane.

North Bay

The north bay covers roughly the area north of the Richmond -  San Rafael Bridge with the San Pablo Bay and the Suisun Bay with access to the Sacramento - San Joachin River Delta. Attractions in this area of the Bay are San Rafael with McNears beach and China Camp State Park, Napa (take a tender up the river to look at the river side of Napa), Vallejo with its nicely restored Old Town, Benicia with its many historical sites, Martinez with East Bay Regional Shorline Park close by, and Suisun City with excellent fishing and Wildlife Center near by.
